LG released its latest flagship, the LG G5, earlier this year. This model boasts an amazing design with a slide-out battery and modular functionality. Rooting your LG G5 will give you full privileges to the Android system. After rooting, you can install root apps, remove bloatware, improve battery life, and perform amazing tweaks.

Rooting your LG G5 is a fairly simple process. Once you are able to grasp the steps involved, you should have a rooted G5 by the end of the article. Before we begin, here are the prerequisites:

  • An LG G5 H50 (Running Android 6.0.1) with an unlocked bootloader. Click here to begin the bootloader unlock or follow LG’s guide for unlocking the bootloader.
  • Android adb/fastboot utility for Windows which you can get here.
  • The latest TWRP recovery image.

Follow the steps below to root your LG G5 smartphone.

  1. Enable USB debugging on your device. Go to Settings > About and tap Build Number 8 times. Go back to Settings > Developer Settings and Turn USB Debugging ON
  1. Connect your G5 to your PC via USB and then open command prompt by pressing Ctrl + R and then typing cmd. Type in the following command:

    adb reboot bootloader

  2. Your phone will boot into fastboot mode. Ensure you allow debugging access when the phone prompts for it.
  1. Flash the TWRP recovery image to your G5. Make sure the image is in the same folder as the command prompt. In the cmd prompt window, enter the following command

    fastboot flash recovery twrp-x.x.x-x-h850.img

    * Replace x.x.x-x with the actual version you are flashing!

  2. Power off your phone and boot into recovery by pressing the Volume Down + Power Button combos or run the following command

    fastboot boot twrp-x.x.x-x-h850.img

At this point, your phone will reboot and you will see a TWRP splash screen and then a screen asking you to allow system modifications. By swiping right, you can go ahead with the rooting process.

  1. Flash both SuperSU and dm-verity zip files respectively by tapping Install, choosing the file in the folder you copied it to (usually /sdcard) and then Swipe to confirm Flash. You can still transfer the files via USB in this mode if you haven’t done that already.
  1. Go back and then tap Reboot > System. Wait a few minutes for the device to reboot.

Unlocking your smartphone’s bootloader or rooting it voids your warranty. Flash a stock OS before taking it to a service center.
