BEST FIX: HTC One M9 Auto Rotate Issue

The HTC One M9 is a monster of a Smartphone, but that does not mean that HTC’s latest flagship is perfect in every way. HTC One M9 users from all across the globe have come across several issues on the device, and one of the most common ones is the Auto Rotate issue. The Auto Rotate issue causes the HTC One M9 to not switch from portrait mode to landscape mode in applications such as the Phonebook, the Messaging application and the Dialer even when the Auto Rotate feature is turned on.

On the HTC One M9, the Auto Rotate issue can be caused by one of three things – a defective or faulty Gyroscope sensor, an incorrectly or poorly calibrated Gyroscope sensor, or a third-party app that makes use of the Gyroscope sensor but refuses to let it go for the device to use. The following are the two methods that can be used to resolve the Auto Rotate issue on the HTC One M9.

Method 1: Calibrate the sensors responsible for the Auto Rotate feature

1. Navigate to the Help application that comes pre-installed on the HTC One M9 out of the box.
2. Go to Tips and Help > Hardware Misbehaving? > Hardware Diagnostics and perform a G-sensor test.
3. Let the test run, and if the end result says something akin to “Failed”, the G-sensor is either defective or poorly calibrated.
4. Return to the Hardware Diagnostics screen and select “Calibrate G-sensors”.
5. Place the device on a completely flat and level surface and then start the calibration.
6. Wait for the device to calibrate the G-sensor and then run the G-sensor test again. If the result of the test is positive, problem solved!

Method 2: Reset the device to factory settings

1. Create a backup of any and all valuable data stored on the device.
2. Go to Settings > Battery and uncheck the Fastboot feature located at the bottom of the list.
3. Turn the device off.
4. Hold down the Volume Down key and while doing so, press the Power button once to boot into the device’s Bootloader.
5. Once in the Bootloader, use the Volume rocker to navigate to the ‘Recovery’ option and press the Power button to confirm the selection.
6. In Recovery Mode, use the Volume rocker to highlight the ‘Wipe data/ factory reset’ option and use the Power button to confirm it.

Follow the onscreen instructions and see the factory reset through. Wait for the process to be completed, after which the device will boot up as though it was doing so for the first time.
