Firefox users sometimes notice that when viewing websites with large amounts of information displayed, small black boxes appear randomly throughout the page. On Facebook, these black squares appear as black, gray and white, and appear over the scroll bar and on the chat boxes at the bottom of the page.
Features all work the same, but some text can be blocked off and icons invisible, making it difficult to navigate across some spaces. One Mozilla Support user explained:
Yesterday my Firefox suddenly started showing strange boxes over various parts of every web page. For example, there are black boxes over the scroll bar.
The problem occurs across platforms, with both Mac and Windows users experiencing the problem. Firefox users have, however, found success in resolving this problem with one very simple method.
Change Hardware Acceleration Settings
To fix the issue:
- Click the Three Lines on the top right and choose Options

- Click Advanced
- Then General and then under Browsing you’ll see a setting called Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Toggle this setting off, so that hardware acceleration is disabled. Once complete, close Firefox and restart the app.
