Fix: Impactor.exe Bad Image

Some applications have produced the error “Bad Image” involving zdengine.dll. Some of these applications include VLC, games and other software. Bad Image error occur when Windows cannot open programs due to the corruption of files or libraries needed to run the said program.

For this error, the error is displayed as: “Example.exe – Bad Image”

“C:\Windows\System32\zdengine.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

In this article, we’ll explore a couple of ways to get this issue resolved. This includes reinstalling the program, running the program in compatibility mode, and running a system file checker scan. Head over to the methods and try out the listed solutions

Method 1: Reinstalling the Program

You should try reinstalling the application producing the error. This replaces corrupted program files with a fresh copy so you can run the application flawlessly. Here’s how you reinstall a program.

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  2. Go through the list of installed applications and double-click on the application producing the error. Go through the uninstallation prompts till the completion.
  3. Visit the website’s download page software you want to reinstall and download the latest executable from there. If you already have a CD, you can go with that too.
  4. Launch the installer and follow the prompts till you complete the installation.
  5. Try running the application again to confirm if the error has stopped.

Method 2: Running the Program in Compatibility Mode

Sometimes, legacy applications tend to break on newer operating systems. Try running the application in compatibility mode.

  1. Right-click on the desktop shortcut of the application or the actual application and click Properties

  2. Select the Compatibility tab, and check the box “Run this program in compatibility mode for:
  3. Select and older edition of Windows from the drop down list. It’s better to check which OS the application supports and choose the mode accordingly.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Try running the application again to confirm if the error has stopped.

Method 3: Running an SFC Scan

If zdengine is corrupt, you should run an SFC scan to repair any errors associated with the said dll file.

  1. Open the Start menu and type cmd. Right click on the Command Prompt icon and click on ‘Run as Administrator’. Accept the UAC prompt when it comes up.
  2. In the command prompt, type the following commands, and hit Enter after each command:

    sfc /scannow

This will run a system file check and repair all corrupt system files on your computer.

  1. Restart your PC and try launching the application again to confirm if the error has stopped.
