Some users are getting conflicted about the BtvStack.exe process asking the user for permission to use Skype. The message usually appears somewhere at the top right immediately after the user opens Skype. Essentially, what this notification does is requests access so that if you have a Bluetooth headset, you will be able to use it with Skype (if you allow it).
What is BtvStack.exe?
BtvStack.exe is part of the Atheros Bluetooth stack drivers for Windows. Looking at its functionality, BtvStack.exe is nothing more than a Bluetooth Driver. The BtvStack.exe prompt is simply requesting access to use Skype with a Bluetooth headset. If we were to go upwards in the processes tree, we’d discover that btvStack.exe is a process normally employed by Bluetooth Manager.
Allow or Deny?
Allowing or denying access is highly dependable in your particular situation. Keep in mind that your option only matters if you actually own a Bluetooth headset. If you own a Bluetooth device, you will only be able to use it with Skype after you hit the Allow access button.
If you don’t own a Bluetooth device, it doesn’t really matter what you choose – the functionality brought by the Bluetooth driver will never be used.
Curiously enough, the prompt is known to appear even if you don’t have any connected devices that are using the Bluetooth technology.
How to Disable or Re-enable the BtvStack.exe prompt
Some users have reported that regardless if they choose to Deny access or to Allow Access, the prompt will return the next time Skype is started. If you want to make your preferences permanent you can follow the steps below:
Note: The following steps can also be used if you started by denying access to the Bluetooth driver and you recently bought a device that needs it.
- Open Skype and go to Tools > Options using the ribbon at the top of the window.

- Next, go to Advanced > Advanced Settings, then click on Manage other programs’ access to Skype.
- In the Manage API Access Control window, look for the BtvStack.exe executable, select it, then click the Change button.

- Next, choose the toggle next to Allow this program to use Skype and hit Ok.
