With the Windows 10 anniversary update, Microsoft facilitated its users to show wallpaper on the lock/ login screen at the Windows startup. Users can set custom wallpaper or Microsoft’s own wallpapers that are synchronised with server i.e. Windows Spotlight. But a majority of users have come up with a bug that doesn’t let them display wallpaper on lock screen instead it shows black screen and when you press a key to navigate to log-in screen, it shows your selected background image.

What are the Causes of Lock Screen Displaying Black Background?

As it is a bug inside Windows 10, there is a workaround that we have found to be effective in this scenario. This problem occurs when your Windows “Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing” setting present in Advance System Properties is disabled. On the other hand, it might also happen due to enabled state of “Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen” option inside Settings. So, in order to modify these settings, follow the steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Enabling “Animate Windows When Minimizing and Maximizing”

If you have disabled this setting, then you need to re-enable it if you want to get rid of this problem.

  1. Open Run dialogue box by pressing Win + R keys on your keyboard.
  2. Inside, type cpl and hit Enter key on keyboard. It would open up System Properties.

3. Inside System Properties, click on Advanced tab followed by Settings. Performance Options window will popup. Enable the “Animate Windows When Minimizing and Maximizing” setting as displayed in the below image. Hit Apply and OK buttons respectively to save changes to the settings.

Step 2: Disabling “Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen”

After performing Step # 1, you need to disable following setting.

  1. Open Windows Settings through right click on the start menu icon. Select Settings option from the list. Inside Settings, click on Personalization setting icon.
  2. Click on Lock Screen present on the left side menu and disable Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen option by clicking on the toggle button.

Logout of your Windows and check for the problem if it still persists. Hopefully, it might have been resolved.
