Fix: Session “EventLog-AirSpaceChannel” Stopped due to the Following Error: 0xC0000188

This error manifests itself as a system crash (BSOD) and it appears very shady to users as it’s not very common among Windows users. The cause for the error differs from one scenario to another but it’s safe to say that Office tools are to blame.

The error is a warning that the performance trace log for the Office 2016 and possible Office 2013, that the log itself, is full or nearly full.  The mistake made by the developers was that they forgot to disable the log before release. Anyway, the problem can be resolved using one of the methods presented below!

What Causes the “Session “EventLog-AirSpaceChannel” Stopped due to the Following Error: 0xC0000188” Problem?

The list of problems which may cause this error is not so large and they are often related to the same log file which has either filled itself up or it’s close to reaching that state. However, there are several ways in which you can deal with this problem, depending on how important you consider the information in the log file is.

Solution 1: Change the Log’s Property to Circular

The log’s current property probably doesn’t allow it to overwrite itself but it will quickly get filled up and it will display this error message on your computer in order to warn you. It would be way better if the log could simply overwrite itself when it gets full.

That’s exactly what the Circular option is there for and we will present two ways how you can change this setting for the AirSpaceChannel log!

1. Open the Run utility by using the Windows Key + R key combination on your keyboard (press these keys at the same time. Type “compmgmt.msc” in the newly opened box without the quotation marks and click OK in order to open the Services tool.

2. The alternative way is to open Control Panel by locating it in the Start menu. You can also search for it using the Start menu’s search button.
3. After the Control Panel window opens, change the “View by” option at the top right part of the window to “Large Icons” and scroll down until you locate the Administrative Tools entry. Click on it and locate the Computer Management shortcut at the top. Click on it to open it as well.

4. Either way, expand the Performance menu under Computer Management (Local) >> System Tools and Select Data Collector Sets menu in order to expand it.
5. In this menu, open the Startup Event Trace Sessions option and locate the ‘EventLog-AirSpaceChannel’ entry on the list.

6. Right-click this entry on the list and choose Properties from the context menu which will appear. Navigate to the File tab in the Properties window and choose Overwrite or Circular under the Log mode section. Apply the changes and check to see if the problem still appears.

The second way to change the log’s settings to Circular or Overwrite is from the Event Viewer:

1. Open Control Panel by locating it in the Start menu. You can also search for it using the Start menu’s search button.
2. After the Control Panel window opens, change the “View by” option at the top right part of the window to “Large Icons” and scroll down until you locate the Administrative Tools entry. Click on it and locate the Event Viewer shortcut at the top. Click on it to open it as well.

3. From the left-side menu, right-click the Applications and Services Logs section and choose View >> Show Analytic and Debug Logs.
4. After that, navigate to Microsoft >> Office >> AirSpace. You should see a menu at the right part of the screen so locate the Properties button there and click it.

5. The Properties window should now open. Stay in the General tab and check below under the When maximum event log size is reached Change the radio button to Overwrite events as needed (oldest events first) and Apply the changes. Check to see if the error still appears.

Solution 2: Increase the Maximum Log Size

There is also another option you could try from the same menu which will effectively increase the log’s size which will enable to keep track of your activity longer. The basic difference between this option and change its property to Circular is that you won’t use any of your data by overwriting (which is done when changing its properties to Circular or Overwrite). This can be important to some users who are all about security.

1. Open Control Panel by locating it in the Start menu. You can also search for it using the Start menu’s search button.
2. After the Control Panel window opens, change the “View by” option at the top right part of the window to “Large Icons” and scroll down until you locate the Administrative Tools entry. Click on it and locate the Performance Monitor shortcut at the top. Click on it to open it as well.

3. Expand the Data Collector Sets section and click the Startup Event Trace Session. Locate the ‘EventLog-AirSpaceChannel entry on the list.
4. Right-click on it and choose Properties. Navigate to the Stop Condition tab and make sure the Maximum Size checkbox is checked and change it to a larger size. Apply the changes and check to see if the error still appears!

Solution 3: Change a Registry Key to Disable the Problematic Log

If the method above has failed to help you resolve our problem, then you can try to disable this log for good as it’s not vital for any process on your computer. Even if you notice some performance issues with Office, you can easily revert the process in the same manner presented below:

1. Open the Registry Editor window by typing “regedit” in either the search bar, the Start menu, or the Run dialog box which can be accessed with the Windows Key + R key combination. Navigate to the following key in your registry by navigating at the left pane:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels\AirSpaceChannel

2. Click on this key and try to locate a REG_DWORD entry called Enabled at the right side of the window. If such an option exists, right-click on it, and choose the Modify option from the context menu.

3. In the Edit window, under the Value data section change the value to 0, and apply the changes you have made. Confirm any security dialogues which may appear during this process.
4. You can now manually restart your computer by clicking Start menu >> Power button >> Restart and check to see if the problem is gone.
