In this article, we will walk you through the Main Menu and explain what options do we have under File, Machine and Help. In the coming articles, we will use some of the options from the main menu in order to perform different actions, such as configuring a virtual machine, importing or exporting the virtual machine and many more.
- Log on the Windows machine
- Open Oracle VM VirtualBox
- Hover over File and you will see the following options
- Preferences – configure the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager (interface, language, storage, etc)
- Import Appliance – import the virtual machine
- Export Appliance – export the virtual machine
- New Cloud VM… – create cloud virtual machine
- Virtual Media Manager… – open Virtual Media Manager
- Host Network Manager… – open Host Network Manager and configure network cards
- Network Operations Manager… – open Network Operations Manager
- Check for Updates… – check if the new update is available
- Reset All Warnings – Reset all warnings in the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager
- Exit – close the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager
- Hover over Machine and you will see the following options
- New… – create a new virtual machine
- Add… – add a virtual machine within Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager
- Settings… – configure a virtual machine and allocate a resources
- Clone… – clone existing virtual machine
- Move… – move a virtual machine to another location
- Export to OCI… – export the virtual machine to OCI (Open Virtualization Format). The Open Virtualization Format supports only ovf or ova extensions. If you use the ovf extension, several files will be written separately. If you use the ova extension, all the files will be combined into one Open Virtualization Format archive.
- Remove… – remove the selected virtual machine from the virtual machine list
- Group – group the virtual machines from the list
- Start – start the selected virtual machine
- Pause – pause the selected virtual machine
- Reset – reset the selected virtual machine
- Close – close the selected virtual machine
- Tools – open the additional tools including details, snapshot and logs
- Discard Saves State… – discard saved state for selected virtual machine
- Show Log… – show log file for the selected virtual machine
- Refresh – refresh the selected virtual machine or selected virtual machine from the list
- Show in Explorer – open the File Explorer and show where the virtual machine is located
- Create Shortcut on Desktop – create a shortcut in order to access virtual machine directly from the Desktop
- Sort – sort the virtual machine in the virtual machine list
- Search – Search for the certain virtual machine in the list
- Hover over Help and you will see the following options
- Contents… – open the user manual for Oracle VM VirtualBox
- VirtualBox Web Site… – open virtual box website (https://www.virtualbox.org/)
- VirtualBox Bug Tracker… – open public bugtracker. In case you encounter problems with VirtualBox or have other suggestions for improvements, you can use this facility to report those issues, which will then be called a “ticket”. Each such ticket receives a unique number that you can later refer to in order to see if any progress was made or add comments to it. You will be redirected to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Bugtracker
- VirtualBox Forums… – open VirtualBox Forum and discuss Oracle VM VirtualBox. You will be redirected to https://forums.virtualbox.org/
- Oracle Web Site… – open Oracle Web Site. You will be redirected to https://www.oracle.com/virtualization/virtualbox/
- About VirtualBox… – more information about the version you are running
