Being able to capture what’s happening on your phone’s or tablet’s screen so that you can share it with the entire world is supposed to be easy, and while Android has made it exactly that, the folks at Apple haven’t done the same thing. Taking a screenshot on a device running on iOS is pretty simple – all you need to do is press the Power and Home buttons at the same on your iPad, iPhone or iPod and the device will capture a screen-grab of whatever’s on its screen at the time. However, Apple has failed to include any built-in functionality in its iOS devices that would allow their users to record whatever’s happening on their screens and create a video.
If you want to record what’s happening on your iPad’s screen, you are both out of luck and in luck. You’re out of luck because there is no way for you to natively record your iPad’s screen and you can’t do so with the help of a third-party app (unless, of course, you’re using a jailbroken iPad, and jailbreaking an iPad is definitely not recommended). However, you’re in luck because there are actually quite a few different ways that you can record your iPad’s screen even with the lack of native screen-recording functionality, ranging from obviously overpriced but highly effective to completely free and enough to get the job done, and here are a few of the best ones:
The pricey solution
One of the best ways to record your iPad’s (or even iPhone’s) screen is to connect it to a computer (regardless of whether it is a Mac or a Windows computer) via a Lightning cable and use a third-party computer program designed to do just that. One of the best choices out there is X-Mirage. At $16 a pop, X-Mirage may not be the cheapest iPad screen recording solution out there but it is certainly one of the most effective ones as it is bound to get the job done and then some.
X-Mirage uses your iPad’s AirPlay technology to stream whatever’s happening on your iPad’s screen to your computer’s screen and then record it. The best part about X-Mirage is that it can also record audio from your iPad’s microphone while it is recording its screen, allowing you to explain what you are doing or whatever’s happening on your iPad’s screen in real time without having to create a separate voiceover for the video.
See steps here on how to run X-Mirage and connect your iOS Device to it
The overpriced solution
Another (much more expensive) solution to recording your iPad’s screen is to purchase separate hardware that is designed to do just that. Opting to use this solution can cost you a pretty penny, but this option is worth listing as it eliminates the need for you to use a computer. There are quite a few video capture devices out there that are capable of recording an iPad’s screen, two of the best being Elgato Game Capture HD (£160 from Elgato) or the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket (£99 from Amazon).
Most video capture devices – including the Elgato Game Capture HD and the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket – allow you to directly save the video you capture from your iPad’s screen to a USB stick. However, most video capture devices only come with HDMI inputs, and since iPads don’t natively support HDMI technology, you are also going to have to spring for a Digital AV Adapter from Apple which costs around $40.
The completely free solution
If you would rather use a free solution that is just enough to get the job done rather than pour a fair bit of money into the endeavor of recording your iPad’s screen (something that is entirely understandable), fret not as you do have an option that you can go for. What’s that, you ask? Well, you can simply record whatever’s happening on your iPad’s screen using another camera – you can use a professional camcorder such as a DSLR camera or a video camera or the camera on your Smartphone!
A ton of people who want to record their iPads’ screens, including some pretty well-known Youtubers, just ‘wing it’ and record their iPads’ screens using just any camera they have on hand. If you choose to opt for this option, you should know that the quality of the video of your iPad’s screen that you record depends on the equipment (camera, tripod) that you use to record it. The better equipment you use the better the video will turn out to be.
Basically, just pointing any device capable of recording video at your iPad’s screen and capturing video will be enough to get the job done.
