Security essentials error 0x80080005 occurs when the definitions file in essentials fails to update itself from Microsoft. Even though; most of the users now a days don’t use essentials; and i would never recommend anyone using it because it always has issues and conflicts with other anti virus software’s. If you decide to switch from essentials to something else; then i would recommend using AVG and we can stop right here. BUT if you wish to continue with essentials; then proceed with the steps below:
First, you have to identify any anti virus sofwares other then essentials already running on your system; when you’ve found them you need to uninstall them and if they have already been uninstalled, then you need to have it’s traces removed. To do that; download RevoUninstaller and use the Advance Scan option (where you will put the name of the anti virus software in the exact name field; and remove it) eg: AVG
Once you have removed traces of the previous anti-virus software the next step is to run winsock command which you can do by following the steps below:
a) Click start and type cmd
b) Right click cmd and select run as administrator
c) In the black command prompt that opens up type
d) Hit the Enter key and then reboot your system.
e) After the system reboot; go back to the command prompt and type
then hit the Enter key. Wait for a few minutes (40 to 50) minutes and then try to update Microsoft Security Essentials. If it still doesn’t feel free to post in the comments section below.
