Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is a successor to Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4). As there are very few networks that support newer IPv6, many administrators argue that it is better to disable this new protocol until it is fully phased out which eventually will. The main reason why it was developed was to cover the shortage of IPv4 addressees as the internet will eventually run out of IPv4 addresses.
Note: Microsoft does not recommend that you disable IPv6. However, if you still want to disable IPv6, you can do this by the following method.
Method 1: Disable IPv6 via Network Adapter Properties
Hold the Windows Key and Press R. Type ncpa.cpl and Click OK.
Right click your network adapter and choose Properties.
Uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)“and Click OK. This will disable the IPv6 only for the adapter that you want to, if you wish to disable it for all other network adapters then follow the steps below.
Method 2: Disable IPv6 via Registry Editor on All Network Adapters
Click Start menu and type regedit in the search box. Alternatively, launch Run dialogue box, type regedit and click OK. If User Account Control dialog box appears, click Continue.
In the registry editor, navigate to the following registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters\
Double-click DisableComponent to change entry.
Note: If DisableComponent entry is not available, you must create it. In Edit menu of registry editor, click New and then click DWORD (32-bit) value. Type DisableComponent as the name, and press Enter. Double click newly created entry to edit.
0 = enable all IPv6 components
Type the value 0ffffffff to disable all Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) except IPv6 loopback interface. IPv6 will be disabled on all interfaces after system reboot.
If you wish to enable it later, edit the value to be 0.
