However, there are cases when you yourself will forget the lockscreen passcode you set up. If this happens to be the case, you won’t be able to access your device. Fret not though, because there is good news and bad news in the unfortunate event that you forget the passcode.
The bad news is there is no way for you to recover the passcode unless by a stroke of luck or pure genius, your brain remembers what the password is. The good news is all is not lost. To regain access to your iPhone, you will need to restore it.
Restoring your iPhone means all data in the device will get deleted. The good thing is you can still backup all the data even if you are already locked out of your iPhone. You can still access your device by following the steps outlined below:
Step 1: Backup data
Before getting everything rolling, ensure that you have already disabled backup encryption in iTunes
Using your USB cable, connect your iPhone to your computer. Doing this will automatically launch iTunes (If it does not, open iTunes up). Select your device on the top-right corner. Go to the Summary tab and click Back Up Now. Wait for the process to complete.
To ensure that the back up process was successful, click Restore Backup and make sure that the backup file has the latest date.
Step 2: Restore iPhone in DFU mode
While your iPhone is still connected to your computer, force restart it and enter DFU mode. Do this by pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time. Keep pressing the buttons even if the Apple logo pops up.
Let go of the buttons once you see the recovery mode screen.
An option to Restore or Update will then pop up. Choose Restore. iTunes will then automatically download the latest firmware for your iPhone. This process will delete all data on your iPhone, including the passcode you previously setup. Wait for the process to complete.
Step 3: Restore Backup
Remove your iPhone from your computer and have it reconnected. Click on the device name then go to the Summary tab and click Restore Backup.
Choose the most recent backup file and wait for the restore to complete. The previously setup passcode should be gone now and you should be able to access you iPhone once again.
Granted, restoring your iPhone with the possibility of losing your data is really scary so the best thing to do is to ensure that you don’t forget your iPhone’s lockscreen passcode. If you still forget it, the process outline above is the best way.
